Black males in medicine have unfortunately become a rarity. I think a lot of this has to do with a lack of exposure of aspiring young black males with medical students and physicians who look like them. So, one of my biggest passions is to mentor young black males who are interested in becoming physicians, and tell them that they are capable and worthy of such a noble profession. During my first year of medical school, I set aside all extracurricular activities to focus on my studies, besides mentoring — it was the only thing I felt strong enough about to take time away from studying. Another thing I really enjoy doing is traveling. My medical school curriculum is organized into system based blocks. I made a point to do some traveling after each block. I think this helped me to stay mentally healthy throughout the year. I traveled to Los Angeles, Connecticut, Detroit, and rounded out first year with an amazing trip to Italy.
